For better or worse, researchers with San Francisco-based?Meka Robotics?and the?University of Texas at Austin?are working on a bi-pedal robot named Hume that they hope will one day run with the same ease as humans across any kind of landscape.

Technically, the running skill that researchers hope to program into Hume is called human-centered hyper-agility.?IEEE explains:?

"Like humans, Hume will rely on minimal perception: when we run, we're not staring at the ground for every step, but rather adapting passively to small terrain variations without having to devote a lot of brain power to not falling on our faces."

The team is aware that?Boston Dynamics' four-footed Petman robot?built with funding from DARPA already has this skill, but?note in a paper?that that robot's "detailed architecture is uncertain to us."

Petman undoubtedly will find use hauling gear for soldiers. The team working on Hume expect their technology will also have a "direct impact in design of human assistive devices for all terrains and the next generation semi-autonomous robot."

While this development seems like good news in the ongoing effort to improve our ability to catch enemies, robots that run as well as or better than humans could be a daunting prospect if they ever turn against us.

Amnesty urges EU nations to probe CIA renditions

BRUSSELS (AP) ? Amnesty International is urging reluctant European Union nations to make a renewed commitment to investigate their own involvement in secret CIA flights carrying suspected terrorists.

Amnesty said in a statement Monday there is "an appalling lack of political will to secure the truth" among EU member states.

Human rights groups have long accused some European nations of covering up their involvement in the so-called "extraordinary rendition" program that shuttled suspected terrorists between CIA-run overseas prisons and the U.S. military base at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba.

Human rights advocates claim that the CIA used the program ? which was discontinued in 2009 ? to outsource torture of detainees to countries where that was permitted.

The European Parliament is preparing a report on individual nations' compliance with a resolution requiring them to conduct independent probes into their involvement. The legislature is expected to vote on it in September.

Amnesty said a resolution should require member states to conduct human rights probes regarding complicity in the CIA operations, afford redress to the victims, and reform any agency that allowed abuses to take place.

The parliamentary "process is the perfect opportunity to press reluctant governments to make progress on accountability for operations which involved egregious human rights violations, including torture and enforced disappearance," said Julia Hall, Amnesty's expert on counterterrorism and human rights.

The Council of Europe has estimated that 1,245 CIA-operated flights passed over the continent, but an accurate count may be impossible.

In a 2007 probe, Swiss politician Dick Marty accused 14 European governments of permitting the CIA to run detention centers or carry out rendition flights over their territories between 2002 and 2005.

Mega wasp named after Indonesian mythical beast

As wasps go, the solitary digger wasps are perhaps my favourites. Females paralyse other insects, bury them in the ground and lay an egg on them, so provisioning their offspring with a living food source.

Among behavioural ecologists digger wasps are revered as a key animal, having been studied by one of the fathers of animal behaviour, Niko Tinbergen. They have also been used by philosopher Daniel Dennett in his thinking about free will and they are just inherently cool insects.

But this beast - a new genus of digger wasp, collected in the 1930s from the Indonesian island of Sulawesi but undescribed until now - may just be the coolest yet.

Pitch black, with massive, sickle-shaped jaws, the beast has been named Megalara garuda. Garuda refers to the part-human, part-eagle mythical symbol of Indonesia. Nothing is known of the wasp's behaviour, but discoverers Lynn Kimsey of the University of California, Davis, and Michael Ohl of the Museum f?r Naturkunde in Berlin, Germany, speculate that the jaws may be used for grasping females during copulation.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Too often, people pass a cardiac checkup only to collapse with a heart attack days later. Now scientists have found a clue that one day may help doctors determine if a heart attack is imminent, in hopes of preventing it.

Most heart attacks happen when fatty deposits in an artery burst open, and a blood clot then forms to seal the break. If the clot is too big, it blocks off blood flow.

The problem: Today's best tests can't predict when that's about to happen.

"We don't have a way to get at whether an artery's going to crack, the precursor to a heart attack," said Dr. Eric Topol, director of California's Scripps Translational Science Institute.

Wednesday, Scripps researchers reported a new lead ? by searching people's blood for cells that appear to flake off the lining of a severely diseased artery.

Topol's team measured high levels of those cells, deformed ones, floating in the blood of 50 people who'd just had a heart attack. The research is reported in the journal Science Translational Medicine.

Next, Topol said his team soon will begin needed studies to learn how early those cells might appear before a heart attack, and if spotting them could allow use of clot-preventing drugs to ward off damage. Some San Diego emergency rooms will study an experimental blood test with chest-pain sufferers whose standard exams found no evidence of a heart attack, he said.

Don't expect a test to predict heart attacks any time soon ? a lot more research is needed, caution heart specialists not involved with the study. But they're intrigued.

"This study is pretty exciting," said Dr. Douglas Zipes of Indiana University and past president of the American College of Cardiology. It suggests those cells are harmed "not just in the minutes prior" to a heart attack, he said, "but probably hours, maybe even days" earlier.

"It's a neat, provocative first step," added Dr. William C. Little, cardiology chief at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. "But it is not a biomarker ready for prime time."

About 935,000 people in the U.S. have a heart attack every year, according to government figures. Doctors can tell who's at risk: People with high blood pressure and cholesterol, who smoke, have diabetes, are overweight or sedentary.

But there's no way to tell when a heart attack is imminent. Tests can spot that an artery is narrowing, or if a heart attack is under way or already has damaged the heart muscle. They can't tell if the plaque inside arteries is poised to rupture.

So it's not that uncommon for someone to suffer a heart attack shortly after passing a stress test or being told that their chest pain was nothing to worry about.

Wednesday's study, funded by the National Institutes of Health, investigated cells shed from the endothelium, or the lining of blood vessels, into the bloodstream. They're called "circulating endothelial cells."

First, Topol's team paired with Veridex LLC, a Johnson & Johnson unit that makes technology used to find cancer cells floating in blood. Could it find these cardiovascular cells, too?

The team took blood samples from 50 heart attack patients ? before they had any artery-disturbing tests or treatments ? and from 44 healthy volunteers. They counted lots of the endothelial cells floating in the heart attack victims' blood, and very little in the healthy people's blood.

The big surprise: The cells in the heart patients were grossly deformed. "Sick cells," is how Topol describes them.

The study couldn't tell when those abnormal cells first appeared ? and that's key, said Wake Forest's Little. It's not clear how many heart attacks happen too suddenly for any warning period.

But Topol theorizes there are plaques that break apart gradually and may shed these cells for up to two weeks before the heart attack. He cites autopsy studies that found people's arteries healed several plaque ruptures before the final one that killed them.

Topol said Scripps and Veridex have filed for a patent for a blood test to detect the abnormal cells.

The silver market has always been, and will continue to be, much smaller than the gold market. The amount of bullion gold for investment available is estimated to be twice as much as that of bullion silver.

Volatility

If I were to ask you which is the most dynamic retail market of the 27 EU member states what would you say? I bet Poland would not top your list. Yes Poland is the most ?on the move market? in Europe in terms of sales growth, modernisation, sales and distribution systems and purchasing power.

Oracle's fiscal 3Q to provide gauge on technology

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Oracle's latest quarterly earnings should provide a peak at just how confident companies have become in the economy by their willingness to spend money on new technology.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR: The report, due out after the stock market closes Tuesday, covers Oracle's fiscal third quarter ? a period spanning December through February. That coincided with the biggest three-month hiring spurt in the U.S. during the past two years. The trend could signal companies aren't as worried about the threat of another recession, encouraging them to increase spending in other areas.

That would be good news for Oracle Corp, which sells software and computer hardware to large companies and government agencies throughout the world.

Oracle stumbled in the quarter the ended in November, largely because several prospective customers decided to delay their purchases. The skittishness raised fears that companies were clamping down on their budgets as government debt problems in Europe threatened to topple a still-fragile economy.

Now that it looks like the economy is in better shape than it was three months ago, analysts and investors will be looking for any signs of other problems that could undercut Oracle's earnings growth. The concerns that Oracle could be grappling with issues that extend beyond the economy have grown since other business technology vendors such as IBM Corp., VMware Inc. and EMC Corp., has posted solid results for their most recent quarters.

Oracle is facing tougher competition from longtime rival SAP, as well as from feisty upstarts such as Salesforce.com Inc. and Workday that are changing the way that companies buy and use software. The online approach to software, nicknamed "cloud computing," is a departure from the industry's long-established practice of licensing and installing applications on individual machines kept in the buyer's offices.

After initially dismissing cloud computing rivals as an inconsequential novelty, Oracle has started to invest heavily in the concept. Oracle completed a $1.5 billion acquisition of Salesforce.com rival RightNow Technologies in January and has proposed buying Workday rival Taleo Corp. in a $1.9 billion deal expected to close later this year. SAP also has hopped on the cloud-computing bandwagon with a $3.4 billion acquisition of SuccessFactors.

JMP Securities analyst Ross MacMillan isn't convinced Oracle's cloud-computing acquisitions will be enough to prevent a significant number of its customers from defecting to Salesforce.com and Workday. That's one of the reasons he recently lowered his price target on Oracle's stock from $35 to $32.

Oracle shares have been hovering around $30 so far this month.

Oracle can only hope its cloud-computing deals work out better than its $7.3 billion acquisition of Sun Microsystems Inc. By acquiring Sun's line of computer servers in 2010, Oracle hoped to create a one-stop shop for business software and hardware. So far, though, the idea hasn't been widely embraced, partly because some companies don't want to become too dependent on Oracle for all their technology.

The expansion into computer hardware also has soured Oracle's relationship with IBM and Hewlett-Packard Co., which used to promote Oracle's software more enthusiastically. The situation with HP has gotten even worse since its former CEO, Mark Hurd, went to work for Oracle in 2010 after resigning from HP in an ethics scandal.

Coming off the earnings letdown at the end of last year, Oracle management set the bar low for the December-February period.

The company, which is based in Redwood Shores, Calif., warned its sales of new software licenses might be unchanged from the same time last year. At best, Oracle predicted its software sales would increase by 10 percent. New software licenses are closely watched by investors because they generate future revenue for maintenance and upgrades.

Oracle forecast its sales of hardware products would fall by 5 percent to 15 percent from last year.

But there are detractors, and it is easy to see why, as I?ve shown. The bottom line, however, is that a chosen setting and a somewhat gimmicky new mechanic does not mean the quality of the core gameplay simply disappears. For some, Sunshine is the worst in the series. For others, it?s the best. All that matters is that the old Mario magic is certainly present.
