The earth is our home; it is the only home we've got. The earth is where we were born, where we raise our kids and where we care for our animals. These reasons alone should be enough to make everyone live a greener lifestyle. Humans are mostly to blame for the deforestation, polluted waters and animal extinction we read and hear about every day, we made the mess that we currently live in and it is up to us to clean it up.

The term "Eco Friendly" or "Green Living" are often viewed at as a chore while others may be intimated because they are not sure what it means to live a greener lifestyle. Being green means to makes choices with the environment in mind, it means to inflict minimal or no harm to the eco-system. Green living does not have to be or expensive and it does not have to be a chore. In fact, darkening your shade of green can be fun and exciting; it can be positive and inspiring. There are simple everyday things that we can all do right now inside our homes that would make a positive change to the environment. Acts of green doesn't have to be big and expensive; the smallest changes can make the biggest impact. Here are some things that we can all do to live a greener lifestyle:

? Recycle: Everything that can be recycled should be recycled and that includes food, furniture, batteries and bulbs. The garbage in the landfill creates gases that add to global warming, by recycling, you're not only cutting down on the garbage you throw out, you are also aiding in the making of new products.

? Reuse: Plastics currently generate the most waste worldwide, by switching to reusable shopping bags, snack bags, straws, water bottles, etc you will be cutting down our dependence of all things plastic.

? Carpool/public transportation: Carpooling, public transportation, walking and biking as means of getting around not only saves gas money; it also keeps fewer cars off the street.

? Unplug it/Turn it off: Turning the tap off in between washing the dishes and brushing your teeth saves water and unplugging chargers and other electrical devices conserves energy.

? Buy local and organic: Buying local and organic fruits and vegetables means that your food didn't have to travel far to get to you and it also means that it wasn't sprayed by harsh pesticides and other chemicals. Pesticides are not only harmful to humans it can cause harm to the soil and animals alike.

? Educate: You may inspire change by educating family friends and peers about the positives of being green.

Living a greener lifestyle is a path that everyone should take; you hear about it and see examples of it seemingly everywhere now. Companies are changing the formula of the products and services they offer, celebrates endorse and try to inspire Eco Friendly living. But being green is so much more than a long overdue trend. We have to start respecting the environment for ourselves, for our children and for generations to come.

Nepalese man, 72, declared shortest person ever

KATMANDU, Nepal?? A 72-year-old Nepalese man who is about the size of a toddler on Sunday became the world's shortest person ever recorded.

A doctor and Guinness World Records official measured Chandra Bahadur Dangi to confirm his height of 21.5 inches (54.6 centimeters).

Guinness official Craig Glenday presented Dangi with two certificates for being the world's shortest living man and the world's shortest person recorded in Guinness' 57-year history.

"I am very happy. Now I want to travel across Nepal and to foreign countries," Dangi told reporters afterward.

He said he has no desire to get married or have a family of his own, but would like to meet the prime minister of Nepal soon.

Dangi lives in a remote mountain village, Rhimkholi, about 250 miles (400 kilometers) west of Katmandu, with his youngest brother and his family. His five brothers are all average height.

Before being measured in the capital, Katmandu, on Saturday, he had never seen a doctor and his relatives say he has never been seriously ill or had any injuries. The doctors who saw him at the clinic also found no immediate health problems. His family is not sure when he stopped growing.

Because of his height, he has never worked outside the house, doing only household chores.

He has a normal sized head and regularly shaves, but his body is small. He is able to walk and climb small stairs. He eats mainly rice and vegetables, and occasionally meat, but in small portions.

Dangi takes the shortest man record from Junrey Balawing of the Philippines, who is 23.5 inches (60 centimeters) tall. He also beat the record of Gul Mohammed of India as the shortest adult human to have their height verified by Guinness. Mohammed, who died in 1997, was 22.5 inches (57 centimeters) tall.

Since Dangi's village is so remote, it was only recently that Dangi gained notice. A forest contractor cutting timber in the village met him and told local media.

Another Nepalese man, Khagendra Thapa Magar, was declared the world's shortest man at 26.4 inches (67 centimeters) before Balawing took over the title in June on his 18th birthday.

In December, Guinness recognized an Indian teenager as the world's shortest woman. Jyoti Amge is 24.7 inches (62.8 centimeters) tall and wants to attend university and become a Bollywood star.

Aside from a Guinness certificate, the titles don't come with any cash award.

Violence across Syria as constitution vote begins

DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) ? Syrians began voting Sunday on a new draft constitution aimed at quelling the country's uprising by ending the ruling Baath Party's five-decade domination of power, but the opposition announced a boycott and clashes were reported across the country.

Polling stations opened at 7 a.m. (0500 GMT) and the vote is scheduled to last 12 hours. The country has 14.6 million eligible voters who were asked to cast ballots on whether they approve or reject the recently drafted constitution in more than 14,000 polling stations around the country.

In regions like the restive central city of Homs, where shelling by government forces has left hundreds dead, or the northwestern province of Idlib and the southern region of Daraa where rebels clash frequently with the security forces, turnout is likely to be minimal.

Earlier this month, President Bashar Assad called for a referendum on the new constitution ? which allows for at least a theoretical opening of the country's political system ? as an effort to placate critics and end the 11-month uprising against his rule.

The new charter would create a multiparty system in Syria, which has been ruled by the Arab Socialist Baath Party since a 1963 coup. It also states that the president, who has been a member of the Assad family since 1970, can only be in office for a maximum of two seven-year terms.

Such changes were unthinkable a year ago, but after the uprising began in March and Assad's crackdown that killed thousands of people, the vast majority of opposition groups say they accept nothing less than Assad abandoning power.

"I am boycotting the vote," Syria-based activist Mustafa Osso told The Associated Press by telephone. He added that in Syria such laws have no value ? Assad's government revoked the country's official state of emergency in April but the crackdown only intensified.

In the capital Damascus, where Assad retains support among religious minorities and the business class, many said they were eager to vote.

"This is a good constitution. It calls for party pluralism and the president can only hold the post for two terms. These did not exist in the past," said civil servant Mohammed Diab, 40, as he waited with four other people outside a polling station in the posh Damascus neighborhood of Abu Rummaneh.

Jaafar Naami, 28, who works for a private insurance company, said, "I am here to say yes for the new constitution. This is not the time to say no. People should unite"

Posters around the capital Damascus urged people to vote. "Don't turn your back on voting," one said.

Another ? showing the red, black and white Syrian flag ? touted the new constitution. "Syria's constitution: Freedom of belief," it said, referring to clauses protecting religious minorities.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said at least two people were killed Sunday in the southern province of Daraa, where the anti-Assad uprising began in March.

The Observatory and the Local Coordination Committees, another activist group, reported violence in several areas including Idlib, Homs, and the eastern province of Deir el-Zour. The LCC said regime forces shelled the northwestern city of Idlib with tanks.

Police: RFK son arrested in NY maternity unit clash

The son of Robert F. Kennedy has been charged with harassment and endangering the welfare of a child for allegedly clashing with two nurses who tried to stop him from taking his 2-day-old baby boy from a Westchester maternity unit, NBC?New York has learned.

According to a Mount Kisco, N.Y. police report obtained by NBC?New York, Douglas Kennedy, 44, took his baby from the newborn unit of Northern Westchester Hospital on Jan. 7, against the instructions of hospital staff who told him the infant needed to stay there. He faces misdemeanor charges.

Kennedy and his wife, Molly, who was in the hospital to recover from a cesarean section, disputed the accusations in a statement to NBC?New York, saying "these allegations are absurd."

The nurse in charge of the unit, Anna Margaret Lane, said in a deposition that Kennedy wanted to take the child "to get fresh air"?that evening. As he tried to leave, he was accompanied by a doctor from the hospital's emergency room, identified in court papers as "Dr. Haydock," later determined to be Dr. Timothy Haydock, a longtime family friend.

While the nursing staff sought to get Kennedy to return the baby to his bassinet, Haydock reportedly encouraged Kennedy to walk with the baby by telling nurses that he was with him, according to Lane's deposition.

Kennedy ignored the pleas of the nursing staff and carried the newborn -- identified in court papers as "B.K." -- to the elevator, police said.? As the nursing staff tried to calm him and dissuade him from leaving the hospital, Kennedy turned and walked toward a stairwell leading to the outside of the hospital.?

Lane blocked the doorway, "placing both hands on the doorknob" to prevent Kennedy from leaving, police said. Kennedy grabbed the nurse by her left wrist and twisted it to that he could pass into the stairwell, police said.

The baby's head "began to move from side to side, and in an attempt to stabilize the baby's head, nurse Cari Maleman Luciano reached toward the infant's head," police said.?

"Instinctively as a nurse, I raised both my arms toward the neck of the baby to steady the violent shaking of the baby's head and neck," Luciano told investigators in a deposition.

While holding the child in his right arm, Kennedy kicked Luciano in the pelvis with his right foot, knocking her backward onto the floor, police said.

As he did this, Kennedy fell onto the floor with the baby in his arms. Kennedy then got up and ran "down the stairs with the infant until he was stopped by security and escorted back to the infant's room," the police report said.

The police report did not say whether the infant was harmed but Kennedy's lawyer told NBC New York the baby was not injured and slept during the altercation.

The statement to NBC?New York from Kennedy and his wife said there was no crime committed.

"The nurse had no right to attempt to grab our child out of his father's arms and I, Douglas, was shocked and appalled when she did so,"?the statement said.

Haydock said in a statement to NBC New York that Kennedy, whom he has known for more than 40 years, was not putting his healthy baby at risk by seeking to take him for a walk outside.

"I?witnessed the incident and I?can state unequivocally that the nurses were the only aggressors,"?he said. "To charge Mr. Kennedy with a crime is simply incomprehensible to me."

Kennedy attorney Robert Gottlieb criticized the nurses' handling of the case.

"What happened to that baby and any danger to that baby was the fault not of Douglas Kennedy?but the nurses involved in this case," Gottlieb said.?"There is no question about it during the entire incident, Mr. Kennedy was acting very politely, calmly, politely."

Elliot Taub, the two nurses' attorney,?said?Lane and Luciano "called?a ?code pink,? that is, it looks like its someone trying to abscond from the hospital with a newborn. That alerts the security staff and when it escalated, they hit what's called a 'code purple,' which means there is someone who is acting inappropriately, highly offensive, is a danger in the hospital."

Kennedy is the 10th child of Robert F. and Ethel Kennedy. He and Molly have four children.

A Brown University graduate, Kennedy started his journalism career with The New York Post and most recently worked as a general assignment reporter and bi-monthly news program host for Fox News.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Adult fans of J.K. Rowling can rejoice: She has a new novel coming, for grownups.

The kids will have to wait and see.

The author of the mega-selling "Harry Potter" series has an agreement with Little, Brown in the United States and Britain to release her first adult novel, the publishers announced Thursday. The title, release date and details about the book, long rumored, were not announced. A neighbor of Rowling's in Edinburgh, author Ian Rankin, tweeted Thursday that he thinks Rowling has written a mystery novel.

"Wouldn't it be funny if J.K. Rowling's first novel for adults turned out to be a crime story set in Edinburgh?" Rankin wrote. "My word yes."

Her seventh and final Potter story came out in 2007, and in recent years the British author has said that she was working on an adult book and on a Potter encyclopedia. Rowling's Potter books, which broke sales records around the world, were published by Bloomsbury in Britain and Scholastic in the U.S. Rowling will now share the same publisher with Stephenie Meyer, whose "Twilight" series at least partially filled the gap opened by the conclusion of the Potter stories.

"Although I've enjoyed writing it every bit as much, my next book will be very different to the Harry Potter series, which has been published so brilliantly by Bloomsbury and my other publishers around the world," Rowling, 46, said in a statement released by Little, Brown. "The freedom to explore new territory is a gift that Harry's success has brought me, and with that new territory it seemed a logical progression to have a new publisher. I am delighted to have a second publishing home in Little, Brown, and a publishing team that will be a great partner in this new phase of my writing life."

Rowling's agent, Neil Blair, would not disclose financial details of the deal but said there had been no auction. He said Thursday that Rowling was remaining with Bloomsbury in Britain for the Harry Potter books.

"As her new book is for a different audience, and marks a new literary direction for her, it made sense to separate the two and for her new book to be launched by a different publisher," said Blair.

Blair became Rowling's literary agent last year when she left the Christopher Little Literary Agency, where Blair had worked. Bloomsbury said its 15-year relationship with Rowling "remains stronger than ever" ? and new editions of the seven novels were on the way. Some 450 million copies of the seven Potter stories are in print and the books have been translated into 74 languages. A billion-dollar movie franchise, starring Daniel Radcliffe as the young wizard, ended last year.

"We are pleased to announce that as part of our long term strategy for Harry Potter we intend to publish illustrated editions of all seven Harry Potter books in a rolling program from 2013 onwards in addition to our partnership on e-books with the Pottermore website," the publisher said in a statement. In the U.S., Scholastic spokeswoman Kyle Good noted that Scholastic didn't publish adult books.

"We will continue to publish her children's books in the U.S.," Good said Thursday.

Any Rowling book would seem a guaranteed million seller, although it's questionable that her new novel will have the same mass appeal as Potter. Adult authors from E.B. White to Sherman Alexie have nicely managed the transition to writing for young people but, once a writer is defined as a children's author, the transition can be tricky. Winnie the Pooh creator A.A. Milne, a successful playwright in his early years, once confessed that he was forced to say "goodbye to all that" after his beloved books about the bear and friends. Margaret Wise Brown, author of the classic "Goodnight Moon," tried for years to write stories for The New Yorker.

Daniel Handler of "Lemony Snicket" fame and Ann Brashares, author of the "Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants" novels, are among the recent popular writers for children who have had limited success as adult writers.

But Rowling does begin with one advantage: The Potter books had an enormous following among readers of all ages and she is widely credited with revealing to publishers that children's books were no longer just for the young. Meyer's vampire novels and Suzanne Collins' "Hunger Games" trilogy also have caught on with both parents and kids. Meyer herself wrote an adult book, "The Host," a best-seller in 2008.

"It would just be cool if my existing fans liked it," Meyer told The Associated Press in 2008. "And I hope to get some new readers who would never go into the YA (Young Adult) shelves."

Beth Puffer, director of the Manhattan-based children's bookseller Bank Street Bookstore, said she'd have to see the novel before deciding where or whether to stock it.

"I assume if it's written for adults, it's not appropriate for children," said Puffer, who added that she might stock the book in a section for ages 14 and up. "There are a lot of former children and young adults who grew up with Harry Potter and they would likely be an audience for her new book. You also have all the adults who loved the Potter books."

One of Rowling's most passionate fans, Melissa Anelli, said she was beyond herself "with excitement." Anelli, 32, runs a leading Potter/Rowling fan site, http://www.the-leaky-cauldron.org .

"J.K. Rowling is simply a great writer, and no matter what she applies her talents to, we will anticipate and enjoy it," Anelli wrote in an email. "I'm also so intrigued by this process: What will happen as the world's greatest children's/YA author navigates the new publishing landscape and publishes for a new audience?"

Rowling's novel will be available in both print and electronic formats. The author held out for years on allowing the Potter books to come out digitally, but announced in 2011 that Potter e-books would be sold through her own "Pottermore" website. The books were supposed to become available last fall, but have been delayed until sometime this year.

This Small Business Isn&#39;t Afraid Of Competing With Starbucks

If you find a new, small business without a super niche and some kind of uber-nuanced element to it, you're likely looking at an all-in-one corporate chain.

Today, businesses?specializing in something very specific?are attractive to mainstream consumers looking for something more in their less.?Stick&Pop?is one of those businesses. Cupcake, meatball, PB&J and macaroni & cheese stand-alone shops abound. So do specialty paper shops, wool and yarn shops and boutiques that carry items where a hip designer has simply put a bird on a collection of reclaimed wood pieces.

The TV show?Portlandia?parodies and celebrates this kind of consumer demand. Popular niche markets may be amusing, but they are more than a trend with these demanding buyers.

Twenty years ago consumers weren't buying perfectly crafted balls of cake on a stick. Today, we see incarnations of the delectable bite-sized petite dessert treat behind the display windows of darling cafes, and even Starbucks.

I spoke with Stick&Pop founders, Jacki Caponigro, the baker, and Christy Nyberg, the marketer the week they transitioned from being an online delivery shop to opening a?brick-and-mortar store?in New York City.

You're not the cake pops many people know from Starbucks. Is the cake-pop-ownership confusion good or bad?

We actually were making them for several months before we saw there was something similar being sold in Starbucks. It was scary at first for us to see our product elsewhere. But being part of a niche market with other players has helped better expose us to the market.

We were able to sample and learn how to be better by looking at our competitors. It saved us lots of time. We were able to improve, and remove what we felt didn?t work. We didn?t have to educate the public about what a cake pop was. We turned that scary reality into a positive. It helped us realize who we are and who we don?t want to be.

What do you want to be and not be?

We would rather be a business that specializes and make a high-quality item. Cake pops are one of?many?things Starbucks sells, so taste and freshness can more easily be compromised. We tasted the cake pops of other companies and found a sameness. So we focused on creating a taste, a flavor variety, a presentation of our own, establishing a standard we felt was the best in the industry.

We don?t keep ours on the shelf as long as our competitors. We want fresh. Our stick is wider, so it feels like a more substantial treat. We put a lot into our presentation, too. That really made it ours. Being small, it?s easier to maintain the quality?we?re not producing the quantities our competitors are. This makes it easier for us to keep our customers happy.

Freshness aside, why should consumers buy Stick&Pops over the competition?

We appeal to customers who are focused on taste rather than decoration. We've remained true to our menu of flavors. While we do love adding beautiful or fun touches and we want the pops to look great, we believe food is to eat more than to look at.

One key to competition is knowing where it's coming from, so we did conduct our own market research by ordering pops from a few companies and even buying the Bakepop Cakepop maker. You have to know what's out there and view your product and marketplace as your customers do.

Why do you think people are so attracted to this kind of niche purchasing?

It seems that the common thread with niche products is a response to one-stop shopping, big box stores or predictable entertainment. There's a growing momentum around supporting small businesses.

People want to get maximum quality out of the dollars they spend. Owning a small business opened our eyes to wanting to work with and buy from other small businesses. [Our store is] located on a block full of other small, niche companies run by business owners who are so supportive and helpful.

How does an entrepreneur determine if they have a viable niche product the public will respond to?

Certain things just appeal to certain people. As a basic guideline, success is probably largely driven by passion for the product. It doesn't hurt to get a healthy reality check from sample markets?even if that means starting with friends and family.

When our orders started to come from people we didn't know, we felt good. When those people re-ordered again and again, we felt great.

It is a big move to go from online sales to having a store? How else are you expanding?

We've existed only online until now. We need to make sure our walk-in customers get great service and pops they want more of, while continuing to build our web business.

In the long run, we'd like to expand by opening other locations and continuing to develop our relationships with event and wedding planners. We have a few products that are ideal for wholesale, like our dough kits. We think they'll become more marketable as our brand grows.

Niche products tend to be more expensive than they should be. How did you price Stick&Pops?

This required a bit of market research, along with calculating our costs per pop. We jumped into the market on the low end, but that may have benefited us. People were willing to take a risk on a new product and company.

We started way under price at $1.75 when we were refining the size of the pop and calculating cost. We didn?t have it down yet with materials and packaging. We raised it to $2.50 a pop. Now, with the store opening, it is $3. A lot of work and time goes into each bite.

Are you looking for investors or managing this for now out of pocket?

We've invested our own money because we want to maintain control. Building out a store has been our biggest investment. Right now, we don?t want investors. We?re being cautious. Hiring a bookkeeper helped us a lot.

We?ve tried to cover our basic costs (rent and health care), so if no one walked into the door we can stay afloat for a few months. We have no idea how to forecast walk-in traffic. There is no great model unless you are a Starbucks.

We?ve lightly invested in PR and have leveraged relationships where we realistically know we can?t do something ourselves. It?s about return on investment. Participating with flash-sale sites didn?t work for us. As an online store, there was no up-sale opportunity or much opportunity for repeat sales.

Where do you hope to be in five years?

We have our sights set on being a destination for visitors to New York, as well a place New Yorkers visit again and again. Our seasonal and specialty flavors keep us on our toes for now and offer ample opportunity for creativity and fun days in the kitchen. More immediately, we want to celebrate weekends with a breakfast box of pops?we're thinking cinnamon bun, oatmeal raisin and blueberry muffin pops.

Researchers develop better control for DNA-based computations

ScienceDaily (Feb. 17, 2012) ? A North Carolina State University chemist has found a way to give DNA-based computing better control over logic operations. His work could lead to interfacing DNA-based computing with traditional silicon-based computing.

The idea of using DNA molecules -- the material genes are made of -- to perform computations is not new; scientists have been working on it for over a decade. DNA has the ability to store much more data than conventional silicon-based computers, as well as the potential to perform calculations in a biological environment -- inside a live cell, for example. But while the technology holds much promise, it is still limited in terms of the ability to control when and where particular computations occur.

Dr. Alex Deiters, associate professor of chemistry at NC State, developed a method for controlling a logic gate within a DNA-based computing system. Logic gates are the means by which computers "compute," as sets of them are combined in different ways to enable the computer to ultimately perform tasks like addition or subtraction. In DNA computing, these gates are created by combining different strands of DNA, rather than by a series of transistors. The drawback is that DNA computation events normally take place in a test tube, where the sequence of computation events cannot be easily controlled with spatial and temporal resolution. So while DNA logic gates can and do work, no one can tell them when or where to work, making it difficult to create sequences of computational events.

In a paper published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society, Deiters addressed the control problem by making portions of the input strands of DNA logic gates photoactivatable, or controllable by ultraviolet (UV) light. The process is known as photocaging. Deiters successfully photocaged several different nucleotides on a DNA logic gate known as an AND gate. When UV light was applied to the gate, it was activated and completed its computational event, showing that photoactivatable logic gates offer an effective solution to the "when and where" issues of DNA-based logic gate control.

Deiters hopes that using light to control DNA logic gates will give researchers the ability not only to create more complicated, sequential DNA computations, but also to create interfaces between silicon and DNA-based computers.

"Since the DNA gates are activated by light, it should be possible to trigger a DNA computation event by converting electrical impulses from a silicon-based computer into light, allowing the interaction of electrical circuits and biological systems," Deiters says. "Being able to control these DNA events both temporally and spatially gives us a variety of new ways to program DNA computers."
