Why is Apple Hiring So Many Retail Employees? - Horace Dediu ...

In the five years since the iPhone launched, Apple created a total of 35,852 retail jobs.

Some of those jobs came from new store openings. The total store count went from 172 to 361, more than doubling. But the growth in employment was faster: from about 6400 to 42,200, more than quintupling. This is reflected in the total number of employees per store which increased from 37 in Q1 2007 to 117 in Q1 2012.

Employment at Apple stores.jpg

Which brings up an obvious question: Why did Apple triple employment at each store? One could answer that many of the newer stores are bigger, so-called flagship stores. But the vast majority of stores are in mall locations which are of limited size. Flagship stores alone cannot account for the increase. One could also suggest that perhaps the stores are open longer and there is a need for more shifts. Again, the vast majority of stores are constrained by the opening hours of malls which, as far as I know, have been steady. Anecdotally, it's also evident that there are more employees in a store at a given time. There are many more of those colored T-shirts at first glance.

One hint is in the design changes in the stores. Apple has removed shelving, registers and almost all non-Apple merchandise. It has replaced the visible stock with tables on which rest products that can be used. If there weren't any people in the store, the store would look almost completely empty, just an open space.

But that's the whole point. The stores are designed to be filled with people. The stores have an open layout because it allows more people to be inside the store at the same time. And the more people the more employees.

We have the data to prove this: The visitors per store per quarter increased from 125k in Q1 2007 to 235.5k last quarter. Nearly double the number of visitors in five years. It's this increased traffic that is closest tied to the increase in employment. This is illustrated by the following chart:

Apple employees vs Visitors jpeg.jpg

Employment is very closely correlated with total visitors. In fact, employment has risen faster even than visitors. By dividing the number of visitors by the number of employees we see how the number has declined.

Apple visitors per employee jpeg.jpg

[If we consider the time an employee spends working we can even guess that the average visit was served by about 14 minutes of employee interaction--this is up from nine minutes five years ago.]

If we assume this relationship as causal, then it might be that the stores are "tuned" to ensure a reasonable if not pleasurable experience for the visitor. In other words, the proxy for a "quality" experience is the assistance of an Apple retail employee.

Taking this a step further, we can perhaps hypothesize that Apple is treating its retail stores as hired to provide a human touch to its products ? not just as a service but as a way to listen and help in the most basic way. Steve Jobs once said that Apple no longer had to be present at trade shows because they have millions of conversations with their customers every day through their stores. These conversations happen with the retail staff.

Through their Apple retail staff, Apple might even be said to be putting a face on their brand. You can see it in the advertising.

The corollary to this would be that the job of the store is not primarily to sell things. This is confirmed by the fact that store employees are not on commission and there is no sales pressure on visitors. Indeed, the sheer number of employees in a store of modest size (117 employees on an average of about 8k sq. ft.) implies a brazen disregard for the economic orthodoxy of retail efficiency and incentives to sell.

And yet the stores are astonishingly efficient at selling things. The statistics are off the charts in terms of sales per square foot and overall profitability. Even though this employee time has a cost, revenues and profits have all risen in unison.

Apple store income jpeg2.jpg

Of course, the products have a lot to do with this performance. Apple stores sell desirable, popular products which are premium priced. But taking these desired products and coupling them with a "human touch" job to be done strengthens the brand as well as expands its volume of sales. It may be that Apple's retail approach could not work with a brand that was less desired. I.e. regardless of a large head count, a Sony store may not see the return on retail investment that Apple gets. Conversely, by not putting a face on Apple's brand the products may not sell quite as briskly. Ron Johnson said on the launch of the iPad that the stores were almost designed for it. Discovery and hands-on time create demand.

It's as if Apple retail has an inter-dependence with Apple, the brand. One cannot live without the other.

This is, as far as I know, a unique relationship for a technology company. If anything, most technology companies have sought the exact opposite: to put others' faces in front of customers ? to break the messy process of sales and support down into pieces to be outsourced to "value adding" resellers.

A pity then that this humanizing touch takes such a long time to build.

All Your History: Spider-Man Part 1 ? Bit by the Gaming Bug | Inside ...

In 1962, Stan Lee and Steve Ditko were working together on a Marvel Comics magazine scheduled to be canceled with its fifteenth issue. With nothing to lose and nothing to prove, the two decided to debut a new character in Amazing Fantasy #15: Spider-Man. The book, starring a nerdy teenager who gained super-powers after being bitten by a radioactive spider, turned out to be one of the most successful comics Marvel had ever sold. Since then, Spider-Man has become one of the most enduring characters in American pop-culture. Not only that, but Spidey?s also managed to find more success in video games than most?if not all?of his superhero peers.

Bit by the Gaming Bug

When Lee and Ditko introduced Spider-Man and his alter ego, Peter Parker, readers identified with the character and his story almost immediately. Part of this was because he had so much in common with the adolescent audience that shared his adventures: young, misunderstood, and trying to find a place in the world. But his real-life, relatable problems weren?t all that had readers hooked. Spider-Man had a unique set of powers and a distinctive look that set him apart from the other heroes on the newsstands.

Unlike many comic book superheroes, Spider-Man?s face was completely covered?anyone could?ve been under that mask. It?s been said that readers are better able to identify with the character because of this visual anonymity. While the decision to conceal Spider-Man?s identity in total may not have been deliberately done for this effect, it?s likely that it helped make Spider-Man the perfect super-powered stand-in for players wanting to immerse themselves in his video game adventures.

But it would be a while after Spider-Man?s introduction in the early 1960s for him to swing into the digital world. In the intervening years, Spider-Man appeared on television in cartoons and live action series. By the early-1980s, Marvel Comics had learned the value of licensing its characters into other media. So when video games began to gain in popularity, the company saw an opportunity.

In 1981, Parker Brothers snapped up licenses to make video games based on Star Wars, Care Bears, and Marvel?s Spider-Man. A year later, the company released Spider-Man for the Atari 2600.? Despite its hardware limitations, the game still managed to provide players with a relatively authentic Spider-Man experience. Spidey crawled up the side of a building and defused bombs set by his arch-nemesis, the Green Goblin. Players could even swing from webs while trying to avoid the Goblin?s webline-cutting thugs in the building?s windows.

According to a 2005 interview with Laura Nikolich, the lead programmer on the project, she and her team were free to make the game they wanted to create?within the limits of the system?s capabilities, of course.

?No one ever told me how to do Spider-Man. We had a few conversations with the marketing people but we would just explain the limitations of the system, and then we?d get our way. [?] They gave us a bunch of comic books, which I read, but I knew about Spider-Man; I?d seen the cheesy afternoon shows!? So it really wasn?t too hard to come up with a game.?

Despite the Marvel?s lack of input on the title, Nikolich and her team managed to come up with an inspired choice for the game?s antagonist, the Green Goblin. The decision, it turns out, was made mostly for technical reasons. Nikolich said that the Goblin ?was the easiest to do because he could fly.?

All in all, the Atari 2600 game wasn?t a bad debut for the Webbed Wonder. The game was enough of a success that Marvel wanted to put more of their characters into players? hands. For that, they tapped Scott Adams.

Adams was a game-maker whose company, Adventure International, was making a name for itself in the burgeoning computer game industry. Marvel and Adventure International inked a deal for the developer to create twelve new text-based games based on the publisher?s characters, while Marvel would publish tie-in comic books that fleshed out what happened in the games. Adams explains how the arrangement came about in an email interview with Machinima.

?We were contacted by Joe Calamari at Marvel. He was Vice President at the time and later he became President of Marvel. He was always looking for new tie-ins for Marvel characters. He wanted to get Marvel into the computer gaming and it appears my name and my company came highly recommended as the place to go!?

In 1984, Adventure International released Questprobe: Spider-Man, the second in the series after the company had published its first Questprobe game starring the Incredible Hulk. The text-based adventure game was paired with static images that changed based on the players? in-game actions, which were drawn by actual Marvel Comics artists.

?All the artwork for the characters in-game was set up by Marvel and then transferred by my artist into the game engine or approved by Marvel when we made changes,? recalls Adams. The programmer also served as plotter for the published Questprobe comics. ?I did the complete storylines for the tie-in comic books and then they storyboarded them, I approved them and then they went to final creation.?

In the game, Spider-Man was sent on a puzzle-solving, gem-hunting expedition by a brand new villain named the Chief Examiner. The villain wasn?t just created by Adams, though?he actually was Adams. Adams explains how Marvel decided on the Examiner?s unique design:

?The Chief Examiner?was going to appear throughout the series. When asked how I wanted him to look I said, ?model him on me!? Marvel asked me to send in a picture and they would discuss it. When I heard back, they said, ?Yeah, you look evil enough.??

While it might not impress modern gamers, Questprobe included many of Spidey?s signature villains, as well as his powers, like his spider-strength and the ability to crawl on the ceiling. However, the action never took the hero to the New York City skyline, a pretty important part of the character?s stories and a prominent feature in the Atari 2600 outing from 1982. Much like the Parker Brothers? game, though, technical limitations dictated certain creative decisions, like setting the game indoors.

?I had to put Spider-Man inside,? says Adams, ?as his travel abilities would mean folks would be trying to take off in all directions.?

Ultimately, despite the game?s positive reception, Adventure International couldn?t stay in business as tastes in video games shifted away from text-based adventures. The company folded in 1985 with only three of the Marvel games made. Spider-Man wouldn?t make his way back to video games for another five years.

In 1989, Marvel?s license went to a computer game publisher named Paragon Software. Paragon managed to release only two titles featuring the character: a 1989 team-up called Spider-Man and Captain America in Doctor Doom?s Revenge, and 1990?s The Amazing Spider-Man. Both improved on the gameplay elements featured in ones from earlier in the decade, featuring the character?s acrobatics and wall-crawling skills, yet neither one was able to offer gamers the same kind of experience seen in the comics.

In Doctor Doom?s Revenge, players switched off between the two titular characters and fought villains one-on-one. But while some villains like the Rhino or Machete appeared, there were some odd choices of antagonists, too. At one point, Spider-Man takes on?a robot. Shortly thereafter, Captain America tussles with?a gorilla.

Needless to say, the game?s devotion to comic book continuity didn?t seem to be much of a priority.

In The Amazing Spider-Man, the hero had to infiltrate Mysterio?s hideout in an effort to rescue his wife, Mary Jane. While the range of Spidey?s wall-crawling and web-swinging powers were on full display, he never threw a punch, lacking any offensive moves. The emphasis here was on the hero using his agility to solve puzzles and make it to the end of the game in one piece. After these two entries, Paragon didn?t publish any more Spider-Man titles.

As Marvel entered the 1990s, the great American comic book boom was waiting right around the corner. In addition, it was becoming clear that home consoles were beating computers in the battle for video game dominance. Soon enough, kids everywhere would be inundated with more superheroes than ever before, in four-color funny books, on Saturday morning cartoons, and, of course, on video game consoles. But how much Spider-Man is too much? Fans were about to find out?

Tune in next time to see Marvel send in the clones?

Great Moments in Google Auto-Complete

As you've surely seen countless times, Google's auto-complete feature fills in what it thinks you might be searching for when you start to type a query.

Most of the time, especially if you enter more than 2-3 words, this can be fast, helpful and surprisingly accurate. Sometimes, though, it's just hilarious.

Take this example. When you simply type "Is", the search engine suggests five apparently common searches, and five great questions of our time:

Google 1

Behold, a snapshot into the mind of America's search engine subconscious.

Is the Mitt Romney campaign getting nervous? Really? No clue why it would be right now, as President Obama looks shaky as ever. Nervous in that he might blow it?

Only slightly less on the mind of Google users is whether or not Comedy Central star Daniel Tosh is homosexual. Definitely a profound topic of debate.

Snooki, pneumonia contagiousness and Twitter crashing round out this amazing top five. Twitter really does go down a lot for a site of its stature.

Follow the jump for more great Google auto-complete results:

The long and short of it: People are rather obsessed with all things gay and medical, and incapable of looking out the window to see if it's raining right now.

Finally, the time-honored, philosophical questions of whether God and/or vampires really exist remain unanswered. The Vampire Diaries isn't proof enough??

Prismatic Opens Its News Discovery Service To Everyone, Adds Facebook And Google Reader Sign-Ups

prismatic logoPrismatic has been in invite-only mode for more than a year, but co-founder and CEO Bradford Cross says that changes today. When I met with Cross earlier this year, he said he chose that approach because he was trying to do something genuinely different ? not just bolt social discovery onto existing products, which usually means presenting stuff that was already in your Twitter feed, but really use social and interest data to recommend content that you wouldn't have seen otherwise.

Convincing your family members you want to operate from house ...

It?s a tough float if we instruct to perform from skill as good as however, a singular of a many critical people inside your hold up have been opposite a perform during domicile notion. It?s a mental condition to we though it can be a calamity for persons who caring for you. The total thought of not possessing a fast income creates them be concerned about you, so, dont censure them. For all we know, you?re terribly assured which your devise will work as good as we sense you?ll be means to dedicate for your latest work during chateau business?you assimilate which though THEY dont.

The primary step we competence unequivocally need to take to await your family members accept your duty during chateau preference will be to entirely learn how they feel. we know, we know, this can be a time any time we instruct others to assimilate we as good as accept your choice. You?re sleepy of handling for a chairman else as good as need to have a leisure of spending time along with your family members as good as buddies, in place of lounging about inside a workplace day in as good as day out. And right here we am, revelation we which we simply should unequivocally entirely learn a really people who?re hostile we

This can be not a tip though consider of it similar to a small kind of a mental plan. ever listened in a tenure ?reverse psychology Ok, you?re necessary to work with this as good as let me discuss it we this?it functions similar to a charm! Should we do this suitable, we competence remonstrate your family members members which operative during home will be a really most appropriate pick for you.

Say points like, we know we caring for me, adore me as good as instruct what is most appropriate for me., we sense what you?re saying, or You?re really befitting in observant that, we cant contend you?re wrong. When you?re articulate to them inside of a non-attack way, they have been starting to behind down as good as move down their fences. This can be an overwhelming approach to assistance your family members accept your work-at-home decision. It?s accurate, my personal desired ones members were not to penetrating upon me wasting my law grade to proceed a work during chateau commercial operation craving possibly to them, we am wasting my degree, wasting my talents as good as wasting my energy. And they dont instruct to see me suffer, be unhappy as good as face mercantile issues. Getting parents, they instruct what just is biggest for me as good as in their eyes, operative during skill is not a tip moneymaking opportunity. More than a years, I?ve lastly non-stop my parents? eyes for a operative during home idea. They eventually ostensible it which we promulgate with commercial operation from all over a creation as good as which I?m apropos paid for a perform which we do as good as which my income is comfortable.

As for a spouse, this is a tiny bit trickier. You see, in 2-income households, if a singular chairman desires to proceed operative from residence, a alternative associate would need to be ready to suggest up most some-more of his or her income to cover for a things that?s ostensible to be lonesome by a now-working-at-home spouse. A smallest of by a initial couple of months with a business, which is. we mean, for 3 to 6 months following operative from home, you?ll need to design to puncture in to your assets or a associate would contingency cover for expenditures, so, naturally, he or she would be a small bit discontented with all a fact. They?re not being greedy they?re attempting to hoop we violation out from a joy zone. Everybody, together with you, hates that. So, dont design your associate to acquire a judgment of handling from home with far-reaching open arms. There?s firm to be a small skepticism.

And doubt from your desired ones is higher as good for a reason which it?ll safety we upon your toes as good as you?re feet stays resolutely planted upon a ground. So, a really most appropriate thing to do together with your associate is regularly to go over a judgment with him or her, lay down as good as module a finances. By approach of example, puncture in to your assets to cover for grant to expenditures, operative part-time, telecommuting, cut down upon expenses, offered a serve auto, remortgaging, as good as so forth. Locate a approach as good as a plan to palliate a annoy for a spouse. Be certain he or she has positively zero to protest about your operative during residence decision. It?s intensely tough to accept, certitude me, if you?re not a a singular who wants to perform from house. If you?re upon a alternative side from a fence, each thing looks so dour as good as uncertain.

Break by approach of their separator not with force, though with peaceful compromising as good as understanding. Then, you?ll get their full await for your perform during skill enterprise.

District: Texas teacher had kids hit alleged bully

(AP) ? A Texas teacher will lose her job after ordering more than 20 kindergartners to line up and hit a classmate accused of being a bully, a district spokesman said Friday.

The teacher at a suburban San Antonio school is accused of orchestrating the slugfest after a younger teaching colleague went to her last month seeking suggestions on how to discipline the 6-year-old, according to a police report from the Judson Independent School District.

Both teachers at Salinas Elementary were placed on paid administrative leave, though the one who allegedly arranged the punishment will not work for the district next school year, said district spokesman Steve Linscomb. Prosecutors are reviewing the allegations and will determine whether formal charges will be filed in 30 to 60 days.

The police report alleges the teacher chose to show the child "why bullying is bad" by instructing his peers to "Hit him!" and "Hit him harder!" It also states that the second teacher intervened only after one of the children hit the boy hard on his upper back.

"Twenty-four of those kids hit him and he said that most of them hit him twice," Amy Neely, the mother of 6-year-old Aiden, told KENS-TV. She did not specify what injuries her son may have received.

Neely said her son is not a problem child and that this was the first she'd heard of teachers having issues with him. She said she wants to make sure the teacher who ordered the hitting does not work in a classroom again.

"She doesn't need to be around any children," Neely told the television station.

The mother added ? and the police report confirmed ? that some of Aiden's classroom friends told him they didn't want to hit the boy but did so because they were afraid not to.

She said she learned about what happened to her son after a teacher who witnessed the incident and intervened went on to report it two weeks later. Linscomb said Neely filed an official oppression complaint against the teachers with the district police department earlier this week.

A message left by The Associated Press with Neely was not immediately returned Friday afternoon.

Linscomb said other students had perceived the boy as being a bully. That's when the teacher went with her students to a nearby classroom and sought disciplinary advice from her colleague, he said.

The district placed both teachers on paid administrative leave and launched an investigation on May 18. District officials have not released the names of either teacher. The one who asked for help disciplining the boy and then waited to report the incident after witnessing it was reprimanded.

"We can't have teachers acting like a loose cannon," Linscomb said of the teacher who orchestrated the hitting incident. "Doing something that's this far off the charts, doing what they feel like is teaching (students) a lesson; we're not going to tolerate that."

Breast milk kills HIV and blocks its oral transmission in humanized mouse

Friday, June 15, 2012

More than 15 percent of new HIV infections occur in children. Without treatment, only 65 percent of HIV-infected children will live until their first birthday, and fewer than half will make it to the age of two. Although breastfeeding is attributed to a significant number of these infections, most breastfed infants are not infected with HIV, despite prolonged and repeated exposure.

HIV researchers have been left with a conundrum: does breast milk transmit the virus or protect against it?

New research from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine explores this paradox in a humanized mouse model, demonstrating that breast milk has a strong virus killing effect and protects against oral transmission of HIV.

"This study provides significant insight into the amazing ability of breast milk to destroy HIV and prevent its transmission," said J. Victor Garcia, PhD, senior author on the study and professor of medicine in the UNC Center for Infectious Diseases and the UNC Center for AIDS Research. "It also provides new leads for the isolation of natural products that could be used to combat the virus."

Garcia and colleagues pioneered the humanized "BLT" mouse model, which is created by introducing human bone marrow, liver and thymus tissues into animals without an immune system of their own. Humanized BLT mice have a fully functioning human immune system and can be infected with HIV in the same manner as humans.

In the study, the researchers first determined that the oral cavity and upper digestive tract of BLT mice have the same cells that affect oral transmission of HIV in humans and then successfully transmitted the virus to the mice through these pathways. When the mice were given virus in whole breast milk from HIV-negative women, however, the virus could not be transmitted.

"These results are highly significant because they show that breast milk can completely block oral transmission of both forms of HIV that are found in the breast milk of HIV-infected mothers: virus particles and virus-infected cells," said Angela Wahl, PhD, a post-doctoral researcher in Garcia's lab and lead author on the paper. "This refutes the 'Trojan horse' hypothesis which says that HIV in cells is more stubborn against the body's own innate defenses than HIV in virus particles."

Finally, the researchers studied the effectiveness of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) with antiretroviral medication for oral transmission of HIV. Garcia and his team have previously shown that PrEP is effective against intravenous, vaginal and rectal transmission of HIV in humanized BLT mice. In this study, they gave the mice antiretroviral drugs for seven days (3 days before and 4 days after exposing them to the virus) and found 100 percent protection against virus transmission.

These latest findings provide important leads to alternative treatments that could be used to prevent transmission.

"No child should ever be infected with HIV because it is breastfed. Breastfeeding provides critical nutrition and protection from other infections, especially where clean water for infant formula is scarce," Garcia said. "Understanding how HIV is transmitted to infants and children despite the protective effects of milk will help us close this important door to the spread of AIDS."

The study appears in the June 14, 2012 issue of the online journal PLoS Pathogens.

Toshiba's Windows 8 RT laptop gets demoed by TI

When Toshiba broke out its Windows 8 RT, Transformer-like tablet at Computex we were quite sad to find it was only a non-functional prototype. Especially since TI was on hand as well, maker of the OMAP processor that will be under the hood. Well, we'll call it a consolation prize, but the Dallas-based chip maker does have a functional version of an ARM laptop that Toshiba will be releasing. The video is more or less the same demo we were given on the OMAP 4470 development tablets -- some swiping between apps and light web browsing. We don't have any new details to share about the touchscreen clamshell device unfortunately, but you can see it in action after the break.

Switchable nano magnets

Friday, June 15, 2012

Using individual molecules instead of electronic or magnetic memory cells would revolutionise data storage technology, as molecular memories could be thousand-fold smaller. Scientists of Kiel University took a big step towards developing such molecular data storage. They succeeded in selectively switching on and off the magnetism of individual molecules, so-called spin-crossover complexes, by electrons. The interdisciplinary study is part of the Collaborative Research Centre 677 "Functions by Switching", which is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). The results prove that it is technically possible to store information using molecules. The study will be published on June 25th in the German science magazine Angewandte Chemie (Applied Chemistry).

"In principle information may be stored in a single molecule. However, techniques that would make such an approach feasible are becoming available just now", explains project leader Professor Richard Berndt of the Institute of Experimental and Applied Physics at Kiel University. Since the 1980s scientists are able to image individual molecules on surfaces with scanning tunnelling microscopes, he continues. Current research aims at controlling the characteristics of single molecules in order to facilitate future technical applications. The Collaborative Research Centre 677 "Functions by Switching" at Kiel University is a large-scale project engaged in such investigations, which aim at constructing molecular machines.

The current study is focused on the magnetism of molecules. Using a scanning tunnelling microscope Dr. Thiruvancheril Gopakumar, who carried out the study, was able to switch individual molecules between two magnetic states. Despite their dense packing in a molecular layer he was able to target individual molecules for switching. "Many research groups are striving to control the magnetic characteristics of molecules. Gopakumar's studies have taken us one step ahead", says Berndt.

The molecules (spin-crossover complexes) were synthesised at the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry at Kiel University. "Even though it took us a long time to find adequate molecules, we are very pleased with the outcome", states Professor Felix Tuczek, head of the research group "Inorganic Molecular Chemistry". The next step will be to adapt the molecules in a way that would allow scientists to switch them with light instead of electrons and at higher temperatures.

(AP Photo/Paul Sakuma, file)

(AP) ? The Coca-Cola Co. plans to start selling its drinks in Myanmar for the first time in 60 years, following the U.S. government's decision to suspend investment sanctions on the country for its democratic reforms.

Myanmar is one of three countries where Coca-Cola doesn't do business. The other two are Cuba and North Korea.

The world's biggest soft drink maker said Thursday it will start doing business in the country as soon as the U.S. government issues a license allowing American companies to make such investments.

The U.S. announced last month that it was suspending restrictions on American investments in the Southeast Asian country, which is still easing toward democracy. Until last year, Myanmar had been led by an oppressive military junta.

Coca-Cola said its products will initially be imported from neighboring countries as it establishes local operations in Myanmar; the company notes that it is has a history of being the among the first to enter or re-enter markets.

In 1949, for instance, Coca-Cola and other foreign companies were expelled from China by the communist government. After full diplomatic relations were established with the country in 1979, Coca-Cola had 20,000 cases of its flagship drink trained into the country from Hong Kong, which was still a British territory at the time.

The Atlanta-based company also noted that Cuba was one of the first countries where it did business, opening operations in the nation in 1906. But after the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro's government began seizing private assets and the company liquidated and exited the country in 1960. The company has never operated in North Korea.

Any Coca-Cola products in those countries are obtained through independent third parties.

As part of its push in Myanmar, Coca-Cola said it is donating $3 million to support job creation for women in the country. The company will work with PACT, a non-governmental group that supports economic and health initiatives in developing nations.

Coca-Cola first entered Myanmar in 1927.

News guide to the child sex abuse trial of former Penn State assistant coach Jerry Sandusky

Jerry Sandusky's trial moved briskly this week as accusers, a former team assistant who said he witnessed Sandusky assaulting a boy, a Penn State janitor and others described alleged sexual abuse by the retired Penn State assistant football coach. The 68-year-old Sandusky has pleaded not guilty.

___

Q: WHAT ARE THE CHARGES?

A: Sandusky is charged with 52 counts of child sex abuse involving 10 alleged victims over a 15-year span dating back to the mid-1990s. The charges are 11 counts of involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, nine counts of indecent assault, 10 counts of unlawful contact with a minor, 10 counts of corruption of minors, 10 counts of endangering a child's welfare, one count of aggravated indecent assault and one count of attempted indecent assault.

___

Q: IF SANDUSKY IS CONVICTED, WHAT KIND OF PUNISHMENT COULD HE RECEIVE?

A: If the jury finds him guilty of all charges, the maximum possible sentence would add up to about 500 years.

___

Q: WHO ARE HIS ACCUSERS? WHAT DO THEY HAVE IN COMMON?

A: The eight known accusers, who now range in age from 18 to 28, met Sandusky through The Second Mile, a charity he founded for helping children from troubled or single-parent families. Their testimony described how Sandusky bought them gifts, took them to football games and had them stay in a spare bedroom in his home for overnight sleepovers. Investigators say they don't know the identities of the two other alleged victims.

___

Q: HOW HAS SANDUSKY EXPLAINED HIS ACTIONS?

A: Sandusky has acknowledged publicly that he "horsed around" with young boys, showered with them after workouts, hugged them and had other physical contact but said he never acted with sexual intent. He said in interviews after his arrest that he is not a pedophile but in retrospect realizes that he should not have showered with the boys.

___

Q: WHAT COULD BE EXPECTED FROM THE DEFENSE TEAM?

A: In his opening statement to the jury, defense attorney Joseph Amendola said the accusers' allegations are flimsy and suggested that some of them have a financial stake in the outcome because they want to sue Sandusky and others. During cross-examination, Amendola also tried to undermine the credibility of the young men, as well as former football team assistant Mike McQueary, who testified seeing Sandusky naked in a shower with a boy in 2001.

Amendola also suggested some of his client's interactions with boys are not indicative of pedophilia but of histrionic personality disorder, a condition in which someone behaves in a dramatic fashion to get attention. It's unknown if Sandusky will testify in his own defense or whether his wife, Dottie, will take the stand in support of her husband.

___

Q: WHY IS THERE NO LIVE-TWEETING OR VIDEO COVERAGE OF THE TRIAL?

A: Judge John Cleland, who was brought in from a county 80 miles away to preside over the proceedings, barred reporters from sending any electronic transmission from inside the courtroom or a nearby media center where dozens of reporters are watching the proceedings. The restriction is not unusual in Pennsylvania courtrooms.

Also, Pennsylvania Supreme Court regulations prohibit all types of cameras and broadcasting equipment in courtrooms during criminal proceedings. The rules give judges in the state's appellate courts discretion to allow cameras, but only in nonjury, civil proceedings.

Senate panel treats Dimon with kid gloves

Reuters

J.P. Morgan Chase's CEO Jamie Dimon was treated cordially by most of the senators, who peppered him with questions about regulation and risky practices at the bank, but did not press him to give an update on an estimated $3 billion in trading losses.

By Roland Jones

It was billed as a tough grilling but ended up more like a light saut?.

JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon lived up to his reputation for steadfastness and tough dealing Wednesday?in a forthright, and sometimes combative, performance before the Senate Banking Committee.

Dimon was expected to receive a frosty reception in his first congressional appearance since he announced the bank sustained a trading loss some analysts now estimate is at least $3 billion. It was a massive loss for?the nation's biggest financial institution.

Instead, Dimon, who has won praise for bringing JPMorgan (JPM) through the financial crisis relatively unscathed, was treated cordially by most of members of the Senate Banking Committee. They peppered him with questions about regulation and risky practices at the bank, but did not press him to give an update on the losses resulting from the trade. JPMorgan is expected to give an update to shareholders when it reports its second-quarter earnings July 13.

?I think it was a pretty favorable day,? David Konrad, a Keefe, Bruyette & Woods banking analyst, told CNBC. Konrad said?he was surprised that the questioning of Dimon by lawmakers was so ?professional.?

?I thought it would be much more harsh,? he said.

Perhaps the most visible endorsement of Dimon?s performance could be seen in the bank?s stock price, which bucked the broader market downturn and was up about 1 percent in late trading Wednesday.

Briefly heckled by?protesters?as he entered the hearing room, Dimon read his prepared testimony and then squared up to lawmakers? questions, which didn?t probe too deeply into the mechanics of the disastrous?trading undertaken by JPMorgan's Bruno Iksil, the so-called "London Whale? at the center of the failed hedging strategy.

Dimon told lawmakers he could not defend the strategy conceived in the company's London-based chief investment office. He explained that what began as a hedge mutated into a multibillion-dollar trading loss.

He insisted the bank?s botched trades were designed to hedge its overall risk rather than simply a speculative bet that was hidden from shareholders and regulators.

?This particular synthetic credit portfolio was intended to earn a lot of revenue if there was a crisis. I consider that a hedge,? Dimon said. ?What it morphed into, I will not try to defend.?

Previously: Live blog of Dimon's appearance before the committee

Dimon, known for his skills as a risk manager, has been an outspoken opponent of the Volcker Rule, which was intended to reduce risky trading by banks. Dimon used his platform in the nationally broadcast hearing to criticize proposed rules to change bank?regulations?-- rules he said do not make sense.

When asked by Sen. David Vitter, R-La., if he thought there could be a ?true version? of the Volcker Rule, which is mandated by the 2010 Dodd-Frank financial reform law, Dimon said, ?I think we?re going to really struggle to get it right.?

When Vitter asked if it would be worth lawmakers starting with a blank page to rewrite it, Dimon said: ?I think it?s unnecessary ? it?s just too confusing,? adding that risk could be controlled with proper capital and risk controls.

Dimon said the Dodd-Frank law has not solved problems facing Wall Street but instead has created a confusing new regulatory system for banks.

?What we set up is a system with more and more regulators. We don?t actually know who has jurisdiction over many of the issues we are dealing with anymore,? he said. ?I would prefer a simple, clean, strong regulatory system, with real intelligent design, but that's not what we did.?

The hearing -- which included questions about bank risk, the crisis in Europe, and penalties for JPMorgan employees involved in the bank?s trading debacle -- did produce a few flashpoints.

When Sen. Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., told Dimon that his bank would have failed if not for the injection of billions of dollars in federal bailout money at the height of the 2008 financial crisis, Dimon reacted angrily.

?I think you were misinformed,? he snapped, saying that his bank did not need so-called TARP funding but was asked to accept it ?by the Secretary of the Treasury of the United States of America.?

Earlier, after Dimon said JPMorgan?s ?fortress balance sheet? is intact and that the bank will be solidly profitable this quarter despite the trading losses, Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., responded that the bank?s balance sheet has a ?moat dug by taxpayers,? noting that taxpayer money has played a part in keeping his Dimon?s bank healthy.

Menendez also blasted Dimon for calling bank capital rules "anti-American."

Dimon, demonstrating some annoyance, denied the charge.

CNBC.com: Jamie Dimon vs. Volcker Rule

Committee Chairman Tim Johnson opened the questioning by asking about Dimon?s ?tempest in a teapot? comment -- the phrase he used to brush off early media reports of multibillion-dollar losses at the bank.

?When I made that statement, I was dead wrong,? Dimon told Johnson, explaining that at the time he had been assured by his lieutenants the the bad trades were an isolated incident.

Johnson, D-S.D., also asked whether the bank?s compensation structure incentivized risk-taking and whether the trading debacle will lead to ?clawbacks? -- efforts to recover compensation paid to employees whose performance was later found to have harmed the company and shareholders.

Dimon said it?s ?likely, though subject to board [approval], that there will be clawbacks.?

Asked the same question by Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., Dimon said there could be several layers to the clawbacks. For senior staff, there could be clawbacks ?for bad judgment,? he said

?It?s pretty extensive,? Dimon added. He said the board will review every single person involved. He added that the firm?s new clawback policies have not been used yet.
