When the tornado hit, 18-year-old Iris Martinez didn?t have time to think. id="2">id="3">
She was crouched in the bathroom with her father and brother in the family?s Rancho Brazos home at 3208 Highview Ct. id="4">id="5">
?Honestly, it happened so fast,? she said. ?I couldn?t believe it that I was there ? living it.? id="6">id="7">
The May 15 tornado, with winds estimated up to 200 mph, ripped apart their home. id="8">id="9">
?The whole house was blown away,? Iris said. id="10">id="11">
Debris, whipsawed by the fierce winds, slammed the three family members, but they survived. id="12">id="13">
Iris suffered fractures on both hands and an ankle. She had numerous cuts and bruises. She was in the hospital a week. id="14">id="15">
Her father, Joel Martinez, had cuts and bruises, and her brother, Joan Torres, 12, had cuts. They required stitches. id="16">id="17">
Iris finally got out of the hospital and was able to participate in her Granbury High School graduation Friday evening at the Fort Worth Convention Center. id="18">id="19">
Iris, in a wheelchair, was guided across the stage by art teacher Mike Tabor, one of her favorite high school teachers. id="20">id="21">
?I?m really happy I was about to graduate,? Iris said. id="22">id="23">
Her casts will come off in a couple of months, and she?ll undergo physical therapy. After that, she?s off to Texas A&M to start a new phase in her life. id="24">id="25">
She?s not decided her field of study, but may want to be a physical therapist. Two other GHS graduates were injured in the tornado and participated in the ceremony ? Nora Mojica and Dillon Whitehead. id="26">id="27">
